Can you fast travel at all?
- Survival Mode switches itself on in a new game, as soon as you have control of your character. Setting
- With Survival on, Survival Mode Improved turns fast travel off each time you open the map, and picking a place only brings up a notice that it's off in Survival. It turns fast travel back on when you close the map. Setting
- Journeyman adds the Travel Pack: with it set the way GTS ships it, you only need a pack to fast travel while Survival is on. With Survival off, the map works as normal. Setting
- In Survival you can still fast travel from the map if you carry a Travel Pack; each trip uses one. Without a pack the map refuses and tells you that you need one. If it says fast travel is disabled in Survival instead, close the map and open it again with the map key. Carriages, inn drivers and boats work either way.
- Without a pack, the map refuses the trip with a notice telling you that you need one.
- Each trip you take from the map uses up one Travel Pack. A notice tells you once the loading screen is over.
- While you ride a boat, the map's fast travel is switched off. It comes back when you step off. But Survival Mode Improved switches it back on whenever you close the map, so opening and closing the map once during a voyage lifts the boat's lock.
- On a dragon's back you can fast travel freely: you need no pack, and Survival doesn't block it.
The Travel Pack
- The Travel Pack weighs 5 and is worth 25 gold.
- Your inventory files it under Supplies, with a backpack icon.
- You can make one at a tanning rack from 1 Leather, 2 Leather Strips, 2 Firewood and a Torch. GTS moved this from the forge to the tanning rack.
- The recipe only shows, and shops only stock packs, while Survival is on. GTS's Journeyman setting ties them to Survival, the same as the pack rule.
- General goods traders can stock Travel Packs.
- Innkeepers can stock them too, in the inns of the cities and the smaller towns.
- Innkeepers will also buy Travel Packs and other supplies from you.
- Journeyman's own torch recipe at the forge is switched off in GTS.
- Journeyman has no in-game menu. Its only options are in its settings file.
Carriages
- A carriage ride costs 60 gold to Whiterun, Solitude, Markarth, Riften or Windhelm, and 80 gold to the smaller towns. GTS raised both prices from the base game's 20 and 50.
- Drivers go to 19 places: the five cities, plus Morthal, Dawnstar, Falkreath, Winterhold, Darkwater Crossing, Dragon Bridge, Ivarstead, Karthwasten, Kynesgrove, Old Hroldan, Riverwood, Rorikstead, Shor's Stone and Stonehills.
- A carriage still takes you if you are carrying too much. It lifts your carry limit just for the trip.
- You can't set off while you're in a fight.
- Your followers take a seat on the carriage with you.
- Carriage drivers have extra small talk.
- Carriages with drivers, passengers and loads of goods drive the roads, such as a line around Whiterun. They're traffic to look at. The files give you no way to ride them.
- A carriage ride never uses up a Travel Pack, and Survival's map block doesn't stop it.
Calling a carriage from an inn
- In an inn outside the five big cities, ask the innkeeper to send for a carriage. Then sit down and a driver walks in to take you.
- The driver charges the same as a normal carriage: 60 gold to a city, 80 to a town.
- If you own a Hearthfire home, the driver can take you there too, for the city and town prices added together: 140 gold in GTS.
- This ride also lets you travel while carrying too much.
- Its menu lets you switch each destination on or off (all on by default) and mark inns where it shouldn't offer a carriage. Setting
Boats and ferries
- Ferrymen at Solitude, Dawnstar and Windhelm sail you between those ports for 50 gold, or to Castle Volkihar for 500.
- Unlike a carriage, the ferry won't leave while you're carrying too much.
- The trip is a real voyage: you sit in the boat in first person and watch the coast go by. Then you step off at the other end.
- A boat or ferry trip isn't fast travel at all, so it never uses up a Travel Pack and Survival doesn't stop it.
- Up to two followers ride along.
- To skip the rest of a voyage, open your menu or use the wait menu and close it. You land at once.
- You can't board a boat during a fight.
- Some rowing boats cost nothing and run their own short routes: between Castle Volkihar and Icewater Jetty, from Katariah to Solitude Docks, and to the Lady Stone.
- GTS adds a short crossing of the Karth River from Solitude's docks. Ask the Solitude ferryman for it (you need 10 gold), then use the Ferry Seat boat, which takes the 10 gold.
- At Solitude, the same Ferry Seat boat is also how you board the normal ferry.
What a fast trip does to your needs
- With Survival on, hunger and tiredness build up at a quarter of the usual rate over the hours a fast trip takes, and the trip alone can't make you colder than the third stage of cold.
Settings and what GTS's setup changes
- Fast travel can end with an encounter where you arrive. GTS's menu setup halves the chance from 10% to 5%. Setting
- Whether you need a pack outside Survival is set in Journeyman's settings file. GTS ships it so the pack, its recipe and its place in shops only count while Survival is on. Setting
- Whether Survival starts on a new game, and whether it blocks the map, are set in Survival Mode Improved's settings file. Both are on as GTS ships it. Setting
From base GTS 118's own files: the records as the game uses them, the mods' own settings files as Jay's collection ships them, and GTS's own menu setup. Each line was read by one reader and checked by a second. A line marked Setting is a menu or settings-file option: what it says is the default. Your own add-ons can change any of this.
